Huang di Nei Jing Su Wen
The Huang di Nei Jing Su Wen (The Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor – HDNJSW) goes back probably to the first century BC. It consists of two volumes. The first one is the Su Wen (‘Basic Questions’) in which the Yellow Emperor has a question and answer dialogue with his ministers, especially Qi Bo. The questions are about the basic theory of Chinese medine. The first chapters focus on how to live a healthy life in accordance with climatic factors and the regulation of emotions. The other chapters delve deeper into yin-yang, the five elements, causes of diseases. The second volume, Nei Jing, is focused on acupuncture, meridians, qi flow and needle techniques.

Shang Han LunĀ
The famous physician Zhang Zhongjing (150 – 219) wrote his book Shang Han Lun (‘On Cold Damage’) in which he describes the treatment of epidemic infectuous diseases, caused by Wind or Cold, and how these diseases penetrate deeper in the body if not treated well or on time. Pathogens first attack the outer layer of the body – Tai Yang – and can penetrate deeper throught the 3 yang and 3 yin layers until the deepest layer of Jue Yin.

Jin Gui Yao Lue
In his Jin Gui Yao Lue (‘Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Coffer’) Zhang Zhongjing writes about internal diseases, like gynaecological diseases, joint diseases and blood diseases. Both the formulas of Shang Han Lan and Jin gui Yao Lue have proven up till today their efficiency in all kinds of modern diseases, like auto-immune diseases, skin diseases and gynaecology.

Fu Xing Yue
This book was written by Tao Hong Jing in the sixt century and contains elements from his lost classic Tang Ye Jing. In this book Tao Hong Jing uses the Five Elements in relationship with the five tastes of the herbs. It gives great insight into how herbs interact with each other. The study of Shang Han Lun and Jin Gui Yao Lue cannot be done without studying Fu Xing Yue.
